Restoring a Heritage Apartment with Modern Restraint

Heritage spaces carry a responsibility. This century-old apartment retained its cornices, herringbone floors, and tall casement windows — and our task was to let them lead while quietly bringing the home into the present.

Knowing What to Leave Alone

Restoration begins with restraint. We repaired rather than replaced the original plasterwork and refinished the floors in their existing grain. The architecture earned its patina; our job was to protect it, not polish it away.

Contemporary Pieces in Quiet Dialogue

Against these historic bones, we placed simple, modern forms with no ornament of their own. The contrast lets each era speak clearly — the old detailed and warm, the new calm and spare — without either shouting over the other.
